Certified Wildlife Habitat

Wildlife garden designer and perennial plant expert Mimi Elmore is more than just a landscape design professional.  She’s an internationally recognized painter, too.  In 2009 and again in 2011, she was selected by the jury to exhibit her botanical paintings at the Biennale Internazionale Dell’Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy.  If you’re interested, you can see some of her paintings on her website at Mimi Elmore

But during spring, summer and fall, you’ll find Mimi in her garden or helping clients with landscape design and garden maintenance.  Wild by Design is the result of her tremendous success in converting her xeric garden into a wildlife habitat, the ground breaking research of professor Douglas W. Tallamy, the author of Bringing Nature Home, and Mimi’s dedication to the emerging field of reconciliation ecology.  The Wild by Design sustainable organic demonstration garden in Lyons is home to birds, bees, butterflies and a host of other beneficial wildlife.  Our integrated approach to bringing beneficial insects into our organic gardens allows us to maintain the beauty of the garden without the use of pesticides or hebicides.  Believe it or not, the garden is adjacent to a deer trail and we have very little predation.  It’s all about selecting plants that support the wildlife you want and putting plants that deer like in a place just for them because they live here, too.

There's a new four letter word and it spelled, neonicotinoid!  Wild by Design has signed the pledge to Bee Safe Boulder to use only neonicotinoid free plants in our sustainable landscape installations for our clients.  We're also working closely with the People & Pollinators Action Network to remove the neonicotinoid class of pesticides from use within the State of Colorado.

If you live in Colorado, we invite you to check out our sustainable demonstration garden in Lyons and see if this is something you’d like to create for yourself in your own yard.
